Rev. Meg Riley has served as campaign director for the UUA’s Standing on the Side of Love campaign. During her keynote speech, Standing on the Side of Love, she will share her view of what living this vision has meant and can mean for Unitarian Universalists and for our world. Rev. Meg Riley is the Director of the Advocacy and Witness Staff Group of the UUA. The Advocacy and Witness team is comprised of the Unitarian Universalist Association staff whose primary responsibility is to take Unitarian Universalist values out into the wider world. They work to insert Unitarian Universalist perspectives into public debates on the matters of the day through our media advocacy, through working in partnerships with other religious and secular organizations who share our viewpoints, and through empowering local congregations to do the same. |
District Assembly is a chance for congregational leaders and ministers to meet, network, ask questions, provide input on the direction of the district and gather resources and information on a variety of topics and programs through workshops, the keynote address and The Marketplace. It is an opportunity for education, leadership development and networking in a stimulating UU setting. Don’t miss this chance for your congregation to have your voice heard, gain knowledge and collect new resources. Consider sending a congregational team to collect information from many workshops as well as to represent your congregation as delegates.
Do you want to attend District Assembly and take advantage of all the workshop, networking and training opportunities but are worried about cost? One-half scholarships are available to participants at District Assembly. Preference will go to those who are attending as delegates for their congregations and youth who are participating in the Interfaith Leadership Training. Deadline for applications is February 26th. See the application on the registration page for details.
Other Events at District Assembly
The Marketplace! - Be sure to check out the items for sale from our congregations and the resources available in this year’s Marketplace. Be sure to shop at the bookstore featuring UUA, Skinner House, Beacon Press and Alban Institute books. This year groups may choose to exhibit and sell their items at their own table, or sell items in the bookstore. If you are interested in either option check the OMD website for application forms. Deadline is February 26. The Marketplace will be open from 6 to 7:30 pm on Friday and 8:30 to 3:30 pm on Saturday
Panel Discussion- Standing on the Side of Love for Racial Equity and Justice. In 1997 at the General Assembly in Phoenix, AZ, delegates voted to work toward becoming an anti-racist, multi-cultural Unitarian Universalist Association. Congregational commitment is an essential part of our journey toward wholeness. Leaders from the First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Kent, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Charleston and West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church will describe their congregation’s anti-racism and anti-oppression work and reflect upon the impact their efforts have had.
Appalachian Music - The Southern Cluster of the OMD is providing us with toe-tapping Appalachian Music for our enjoyment. Uncle Eddie and Robin, local musicians, will perform original music. According to their website, “An evening with Uncle Eddie and Robin is like sitting down with old friends. Kick off your shoes, put up your feet, and open yourself to a musical experience which will make you laugh and cry, and laugh again.” Learn more at http://uncleeddieandrobin.com
Opening Celebration and Banner Parade - The Saturday morning worship will be led by Rev. Rose Edington and Rev. Mel Hoover of the UU Congregation, Charleston, WV. The sermon title will be “It’s Never Too Late to Give a Horse.” Part of the opening celebration is the annual Banner Parade. Bring your congregation’s banner and be ready to join the parade. If your congregation does not have a banner, please contact the district office for the guidelines for congregational banners. Please note this change: Banners will be displayed in the hallway and lobby of the building. Bring a flip charter holder to hang your banner on if you wish to display it.
Networking Luncheons - Various interest groups in the district will gather for networking lunches during our lunch hour. This year the groups will include: congregational presidents; congregational treasurers and finance chairs; social justice chairs and those interested in social justice issues; young adults; religious educators and religious education chairs. Special rooms will reserved for each group to eat and network during the lunch hour. Please indicate if you will be joining one of these groups on your registration form.
Closing Worship - Following the Annual Meeting, the Southern Cluster will lead us in a brief worship service to send us off energized.
Awards Presentation - We will celebrate our District Award winners during our opening night activities. Following the panel discussion and before our great Appalachian music we will recognize those who have contributed to the life of the district and our congregations. Awards include: OMD Unsung Hero; UU Visibility Award; Service to Youth and Children Award; Faith in Action Award; and Congregational Rising Stars.
