O-MD Unsung Hero Award

The OMD Unsung Hero Award honors a person who is judged to have given high levels of service to the district, cluster, their congregation and/or the community at large while receiving relatively low levels of recognition. The disparity between the degree of service and the degree of recognition is important in this award.

This year there was a tie.

2006 Unsung Hero: Thomas Dyer Allen

Member of the Delaware Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.

For his twenty seven years of service and contribution to the Fellowship, sharing his musical talent, serving on and leading committees, and participating in all Fellowship activities. Also for his diverse contribution to  the community.

2006 Unsung Hero: Jerry and Maureen Huelsenbeck

Members of the UU Church of the South Hills, Pittsburgh, PA.

For their strong commitment to Unitarian Universalism, their extensive involvement both as leaders and doers in their church and in the larger world, for their dedication, long volunteer hours and their willingness to step forward in times of need.

O-MD Faith In Action Award

The Faith In Action Award is a new award created in 2005 to honor a group or congregation who put our faith in action.

2006 Faith In Action Award: Urban Hope Unitarian Universalist Community, Cleveland, OH

Presented in recognition of the variety of projects and activities showing how Unitarian Universalists can help in the inner city; for their presences and leadership in the community, including faith-based communities; and for their commitment to direct social justice work.

This UU Community has a number of outreach programs that assist and aide their neighbors in urban Cleveland. They worked to get computers and library books donated to the Kentucky School, a predominantly African American and Latino Cleveland public school; they provide an every other month Karaoke night for the women and children at a nearby shelter; they are active in InterAct Cleveland and Shared Ministry Interfaith groups. They have hosted Urban Immersion Day for four years with great success. They also provide an HIV drop in services center every Friday night and maintain a community garden where they work with the children from the Kentucky School.
