"We Are Your Children"

The Welcoming Congregation Committee of Southwest Unitarian Universalist Church, Berea, Ohio, seeks opportunities to make a presentation at a Sunday Service or other program. We do a readers’ theatre version of the one-act play “We Are Your Children,” by Craig Miller. It runs about twenty-five minutes and presents a powerful message. We have performed it in our own church in lieu of sermon on a Sunday morning. However, it has no religious dialogue and so is appropriate for secular settings as well.

The play has five main characters--a lesbian, a gay man, a gay boy, a mother, and a father. A sixth character, a fundamentalist preacher, makes a brief appearance. The characters do not relate to each other but alternate telling their stories to the audience. The three gay persons describe the difficulty of being gay and seeking acceptance. The mother and father are initially distraught but become accepting by the end of the play. The fundamentalist preacher is appropriately nasty.

We do not accept honoraria. We would expect reimbursement of travel costs outside the Cleveland metropolitan area. We need reasonable advance notice to be able to commit all six performers for a specific date.
