The current Chalice Lighter's call benefits the Oberlin UU Fellowship in Oberlin, OH. This call was sent out November 1, 2008.

The Oberlin Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Oberlin OH, asks for Chalice Lighter assistance to increase outreach and publicity to address its lack of visibility in the Oberlin community.  The congregation has no building of its own.  It meets for Sunday service in a day care center and rents office space in a small building.  There is no sign on the office building and only a hand-lettered sign outside the day care center on Sunday morning (see below). A small listing in the local yellow pages is the only permanent source of visibility.

To address their visibility problem, the congregation plans to:

  1. Purchase professionally made signs, so that the congregation has an attractive physical presence throughout the week.  The Fellowship will purchase 4 highway signs to be posted by the main roads into the town of Oberlin, put a sign on the office building, and  replace the hand-lettered sign outside the service location with a more attractive one that can be read from both directions.
  2. Purchase a demographic study from Percept to help identify potential new members.  The Fellowship will then create and target mailings and newspaper advertisements based on the information obtained from the study. This company has an arrangement with the UUA to offer UU Congregations a discount.

The Oberlin UU Fellowship is a small but vibrant community that is well-positioned to make a quantum leap in growth.  They have recently hired a half-time minister which has improved the quality of Sunday worship services and allowed them to expand their programming.  Because they planned ahead and put aside money in an a special reserve account, they have funds to pay the minister’s salary for the next 3 years.  Now they want to focus their energy on reaching out and expanding the congregation. This Chalice Lighter grant, which will be used to purchase the signs and demographic study, will enable the congregation to become a visible part of the Oberlin community, increase its outreach to others, and welcome new visitors.
