Early Afternoon Workshops •• Intergenerational (1:30 to 3:00)

Where Did We Come From? Stories of Our Unitarian Universalist Past

Rev. Dr. Tom Chulak, Acting OMD District Executive

How did we get to be who we are as Unitarian Universalists? How did our principles come to be cen-tral? These and other questions will be addressed through stories from our past. Come and be con-nected.

Tom is a life long UU and has been a minister for 25 years. In addition to serving four congregations and working for the UUA, Tom has taught Unitarian Universalism at two theological schools.

Superheroes Leo Nagorski

“It‛s a bird! It‛s a plane!” We‛ll take a look at some of our favorite superheroes, via comics, television and movies. Are these heroes good or bad for us – and what has been their effect on our culture? Let‛s talk it over.

Leo has been a member of Allegheny UU Church since 1976, and a Humanist for almost as long. Leo has been a life-long superhero fan (does that suggest an answer to the above questions?).

Dungeons and Dragons

William Stricker

Join us for an adventure full of orc hunting, barfights, piles of gold, drunken dwarves and, of course, fair lasses/lads*. New and experienced gamers are welcome! All rules will be taught and all materials will be provided. *Sorry, ladies, Orlando Bloom not included

William is a member of 1st Church of Toledo and has run several informal gaming sessions at SI over the past few years, and has now decided to make it official.

Body Art

Jane Dirks

Come and participate in the ancient traditions of hair, skin and nail decoration. You, too, can learn body painting, hair braiding, wrapping and dying, and temporary tattoo application! A different Body Art will be taught each day. Your own body art supplies are always welcome!

Jane – a ringer for the SI fairy – has been practicing her Body Art at SI for several years now. At home, she teaches high school, serves as Community Lay Leader for Allegheny UU Church in Pittsburgh, and forces people to play board games with her (she does that at SI, too, sometimes.)

Duct-tape-palooza

Dana Bjorkland and CJ Leavens

Back by popular demand! Did you make a wallet, purse, cell phone holder, sash, shoes or light saber last year? What have you always wanted to build, but were afraid you didn‛t have the know-how, tools, or wherewithal to do it? Now‛s your chance at Duct-tape-palooza II: the workshop that will stick in you craw. This year we‛ll be making a working space shuttle (just kidding, but start thinking along BIG lines for our community project this summer). What to bring? An extravagant vision and a throw-away t-shirt.

Dana is a religious educator, stained glass artiste, librarian wannabe and general goof-off. CJ works in Sweepstakes, is a collage artist, has a fantastic Pez collection, and only some-times goofs off

Folk Orchestra

Pat Lorei

OK. So, you‛re reading this in the spring time or early summer. But, I‛m writing this enticement to come and be a part of the SI‛06 Folk Orchestra in the middle o‛ the winter. In fact, we just celebrated National Accordion Day (January 13, if you recall!). In between going outside to shovel out the drivewayand doing it again, I was trying to come up with a written audition format. So, here goes:

My instrument is: mine (1 point), borrowed (1 point), borrowed without owner‛s permission (2 points).

I like to play: folk music (2 points), regular music (2 points), jazz (2 points), polkas (14 points).

I can: read notes (2 points), read chords (2 points), sort of read chords and or notes (3 points).

I will: be quiet and patient at rehearsal (4 points), give thought-ful suggestions (4 points), be like the “old timers” (deduct 1 point).

TOTAL ______.

Whatever your score - bring your instrument, email mequestions or suggestions (npblorei@earthlink.net) -and we‛ll dosome tunes from various “folk” traditions.

Pat plays in the Mar-vels band in Erie PA and he really does appreciate and value the “seasoned veterans” who contribute so much every SI (see above)

ALL Afternoon Workshops •• (1:30 to 4:15)

Art Space

Erin Riffel

Come be creative in a fun, friendly and messy atmosphere. You will meet people of all ages, and make something beautiful and special. We will have some new projects, and some of our old favorites (bring an extra T-shirt or pillowcase to tie-dye). New this year – Art Space will extend over a longer period of time (until 4:15pm), so that you can take your time with your project!

Erin is a graduate student in Arts Administration and currently works with the University of Akron Art Education Program. Erin is active at every UU level, her home church of Akron, the young adult pro-grams of the OMD and continentally at C*UUYAN.

Hogwarts!!

Professor Dazzleswift

Here we go, Hogwarts, SI Branch, 2006. Bring your robe, wand, and wizard paraphernalia, to join in the fun and meaningful interaction between young and old alike. Get sorted, go to magic classes, solve a mystery, be part of a House common room, but abso-lutely NO BROOMSTICKS. Can you face a Dementor accurately? Bring your ADULT with you to assist in the magic we do. Potions, Charms, Defense against the Dark Arts, who knows what else we will pull out of our hats?

Professor Dazzleswift, Auror, Unicorn Spec. has been doing Hogwarts activities since SI 2001. Come and see us once, and you‛ll understand why. The Harry Potter books are the phenomenon we‛ve been waiting for. Loaded with UU principles and challenges, we can learn much from each other. My granddaughters began attending at age 3.

Choir

Hal Walker

Choir is a wonderful opportunity to take an active role of service in the SI community. Our mission will be to experience and share the joy of singing in an ensemble. Paying attention to vowels and consonants, we will shape sound waves and create beauty. Our repertoire will be a variety of music appropriate for summer retreat. We‛ll take anybody with an interest in singing.

Hal, an SI regular, is the director of music at the UU Church of Kent. He makes his living as an Ohio Arts Council artist-in-residence in schools around Ohio. He brings with him a unique approach to church music and a love of singing.

Yoga

Virginia Henthorn

Relax, rejuvenate and renew with time spent with gentle yoga in the late afternoon. We‛ll do some centering meditation, breathing techniques, yoga postures and deep relaxation. If you can, please bring a yoga mat and an eye bag. Loose, comfortable, layered clothing is ideal.

Virginia lives in Marietta and is a certified Kripalu Yoga Instructor. She has been leading classes for 10 years.

Dancing Your Prayers

Pat Trudeau

Flow through the afternoon! Come and experience worship through movement. We will also look a bit at the history of sacred movement and ways to integrate move-ment into our own spiritual practices. Our music will include samples from various world cultures and from different historical periods. Maybe we will create our own rituals, hopefully we will enhance our prayer life and meditation, but definitely, we will move!

Women participants, please bring a skirt and a scarf. Men are welcome, too!

Pat is a member of First Unitarian Church in Pittsburgh. She is a trained facilitator of Sacred
Circle Dance, which she has presented previously at SI.

Listening for God -in the Afternoon

Edie Schwede and Rev. Roy Phillips

Following up on their morning workshop, and based on a book of the same name, Edie and Rev. Roy will welcome their morning participants, and anyone else who is interested, to discuss the stories, which reveal God in everyday life. Past experience suggests that the afternoon discussions will be free-wheeling, touching topics far and wide. The story of that day will be posted in advance, to allow preparation for people who feel so inclined.

Ultimate Frisbee

Carolyn Behrman and Seth Sykora-Bodie

Come enjoy the elegance of soccer without the annoying foot-skills, the glory of football without the beer commercials, the camaraderie of rugby without the wedgies, and friendly competition between youth and adults. We may or may not have any of this, but we will have lots of fun! Some running ability and Frisbee skill (rusty or otherwise) will come in handy, but newcomers will be welcome. Discs and ice water are provided.

Carolyn attends the UU Church in Kent. She played Ultimate Frisbee with the Zephyrs, a club team in Philadelphia for several years. Later, while doing anthropologic research in Swaziland, she introduced the game to students and faculty at the University of Swaziland. Seth is a member of the Ginger Hill Church and a recent high school graduate who has been playing ultimate for 5 years , 3 at SI. He likes to sail and play soccer and was the last district Youth Social Action Coordinator. Seth just spent the year on a Rotary exchange in France wiling away the time, learning french, and teaching his French friends to play ultimate . He will attend college in the fall where he plans to (at the very least) minor in ultimate frisbee. He‛s happily cutting his year in France short by a month just to come back to play frisbee with UUs.

Drawing from Nature

Judy Brannan

Whether through the drawing of an expansive landscape or a thoughtful portrait of a single leaf – the artist can come to know nature better through careful observation.

This workshop will, weather permitting, take place at a different venue each day – on or near the cam-pus. Participants will be encouraged to experience nature through careful observation and record those observations by drawing.

No experience is necessary. Enthusiasm is encouraged. Participants are asked to bring their favorite drawing media: pencil, pen & ink, charcoal, etc. (Pencils, paper, erasers will also be provided for those spur-of-the-moment participants.

Judy is an artist and member of the UU Church of Kent who has presented several popular SI work-shops in past years.

Theme Talk Back

Reverend Gary Kowalski

Reverend Gary Kowalski will meet with those who wish to talk about his theme for the day. This is a Summer Institute tradition, a free-wheeling discussion and sharing of views related to the morning message.
