The May Chalice Lighter Call goes to kick start religious education growth

“Some beliefs are like shadows, clouding children’s days with fears of unknown calamities.  Other beliefs are like sunshine, blessing children with the warmth of happiness.”

mvuuc campoutSophia Lyon Fahs, the “mother” of UU Religious Education knew the importance of basing Religious Education in children’s own experiences.  Her contributions to RE have helped UUism grow as teachers, children, and congregations deepen their understanding of our faith and learn to put our faith into action.

The small-but-growing Maumee Valley UU Congregation (Bowling Green, OH), understands the deep importance of Religious Education!

Their Chalice Lighter Application asks OMD congregations to help kick start the first year of a new part-time Director of Religious Education.  The amount raised through Chalice Lighters will be matched by the congregation.

MVUUC is busy thankfully and joyfully implementing their plan to grow UUism in the Maumee Valley.  Their intentional decision to grow led them to carefully plan and save so they could call their first settled minister:  Rev. Lynn Kerr, in fall 2011.  Now they are asking Chalice Lighters to help them initiate the next phase of their growth plan.

The congregation’s pledge campaign this year will have a special emphasis on Religious Education.  Rev. Kerr says the pledge campaign is based in gratitude because it helps prepare the congregation for what lies ahead.  The emphasis on RE reminds them they can leave a legacy of UUism after they’re gone.

A new DRE in Maumee Valley will help our UU children answer important life and faith questions – Who are you?  What do you believe as a UU?  How does being UU help you make decisions?

This emphasis on religious education for well-grounded children and youth may not be as ‘concrete’ as some chalice lighter requests – such as paving a parking lot -- but it will help grow UUism in Bowling Green.  And as these UU children and youth move on with their lives – who knows where this grounding will take them?
